“The Serenity Hill Secret Is Out”…
Old Chatham, NY-October 11 , 2007- Many have driven on Rte 66 and have seen the farm way up on the hill top, in the heart of Old Chatham, and many have had pleasure of being a part of the great experience Serenity Hill Farm has to offer. But the question always has been “who is up there?” “And what is going on up on that hill?” Well, the answer is simple…. Living life with the best of both worlds—horses and kids that love them!
While, being on one of the most beautiful hilltops in Old Chatham, NY with 360 degree views of rolling hills, and towns in the distance, you get have the experience of going back to nature and really enjoying the sport of horseback riding whether your young or old. Owners Kevin and Terri Anne Dougherty have spent the last year and half, upgrading and expanding the already “one of kind” equine facility, including the best part, a $125,000.00 indoor arena expansion. The facility houses 14 stalls, with state of the art amenities, but as well as extra conveniences for boarders, and students to have total comfort. “In this business, it’s tough to make it, rumors in a small community are always an issue of what is true and no matter how much you spend, you realistically can not accommodate everyone’s requests, but the simple fact is we are an exceptional facility that goes above and beyond basic boarding and lessons.” “We have been commended on our level of cleanliness, our specialized feeding programs for all horses, especially those that have special dietary/health issues and our fabulous amenities by area professionals and clients that come here weekly. They let us know that providing the extra comforts like laundry service, refreshments and snacks, it really makes a difference to them with their busy lifestyles, especially when they have children.” states, Christie Hugabone, Stable Manager.
In addition to their existing programs which include a “Confidence Building Program”, Serenity Hill has begun an “After School Riding Program” for children age 5 and up. They offer children at levels of beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons for dressage, hunter/jumper and recreational riding. Children can come to the farm and get ready for lessons and just “be kids”, while enjoying the company of their friends and “horsing around” in the barn. “ It brings me great happiness to see their little faces grinning ear to ear with excitement when they pull out their favorite pony for a lesson…the kids are why we built this place and thats what makes it all worth it!” says, Terri Anne Dougherty, owner of Serenity Hill Farm.

“Cause for Celebration”
OLD CHATHAM, NY-December 11, 2007- On Sunday December 9th, 2007 up on the hill at Serenity Hill Farm, the horses were trotting not for lessons… but for a great cause. Their “mane” point? To bring the community together to help those in need this Holiday Season. Serenity Hill Farm and their After School Riding Program hosted a “Toys for Trots” Holiday Pageant to support the national Toys for Tots organization and help those in Columbia County. Family, friends, and locals attending were asked to donate a new unwrapped toy as admission to the show while enjoying warm cocoa and sweet delectable homemade goodies by the parents and students of the riding program.
For the past eight weeks, Instructor Mary E. Hogencamp, a retired, Captain of the NYS Police, trained the students and horses for many hours and all the hard work paid off! Not only did the audience enjoy quadrille riding to Holiday music, old fashioned, narrated Christmas stories, and the cutest elves in Santa’s workshop, but they also came through at the finale with a total of over forty new toys and $150.00 in cash donations. “This was the most fun I have ever had! The kids were absolutely phenomenal in their performances and the support I received from the parents, the Old Chatham Pony Club, and the local businesses such as C &K Tack is what made this a success! Now there will be more than forty more kids in the community who will get a shiny new toy, but also be given some hope on Christmas morning.” “ For me, Christmas is about “the kids.” Says Terri Anne Dougherty, Owner of Serenity Hill Farm.
Even though the Pageant is over, those who wish to donate to Toys for Tots can do so by visiting their website,
www.toysfortots.org to find a collection site.

SERENITY HILL EQUINE
“The BUCK Stops here!”
June 18, 2009-Old Chatham, NY: Over the past two years, Serenity Hill Equine, formerly known as Serenity Hill Farm, LLC, has done more than just change its name, and upgrade its amenities, it has added a new rehabilitation program to help their equine friends and the riders that love them so much, so they can get back in the saddle and stay in it!
With the expertise and help of Carol Vischer-Safran, DVM of Northeast Performance Equine, Terri Anne Dougherty, has been able to take unhappy and uncomfortable horses, which most would think they just have behavioral problems by their constant bucking and "ugly" faces, but she has been able to get them back in the show ring, out in the trails and have their owners find some relief that their beloved equine is happy and healthy and not hurting any more. Over the last two years Terri Anne Dougherty, with the help of Dr.Carol Vischer and farrier Norm Rutledge, they worked on some tough, but unfortunately common spine cases and figured out what was wrong with some of the horses owned by Serenity Hill and some of their clients. It began with a thorough medical examination, x-rays, and then coming up with a structured plan of why, and what to do? Many included a series of injections (if necessary in different joints or vertebrae), specifically designed and timed ground work on a daily basis and getting back to the basics of correct riding, getting the desired end result of a well muscled and well built top line horse, that is no longer bucking or “giving you the business,” every time you mount them.
“We have had about five equine cases over the last year, that have been extremely successful and at one point, you would have thought that they would have to be retired as “lawn ornaments”, or only to maybe …just light trail riding, but with the help of Carol and Norm and the medical advancements available today, we were able to make these animals comfortable enough to get through their rehabilitation and be pain free at the end so they could enjoy life again,” Says Terri Anne Dougherty, owner of Serenity Hill Equine. “It takes more than just injecting them, that is only temporary, or just assuming they have a bad attitude, when they start bucking or swooping a kick out…they are telling us much more and listening to them is key in to helping them, they are telling you, I HURT!. “ “Many clients are in tears and just don’t know what to do, especially after the investment of the horse and the personal attachment, they just want them better, but don’t have the time to do what is needed, because of where the horse lives or they live in the city and can’t be here.” “We do it for them, because it is very time consuming and for the most part, very repetitive, hard work…I mean think about it, having to rehab your horse on a line every day, and not ride them for weeks or months, that stinks, but it is what is necessary to bring them back to where they need to be, to be pain free.”
The basics of the rehabilitation program consists of an exam, x-rays (if needed), and doing what is necessary to make the horse comfortable and ride-able again. Not all horses are fixable, but the majorities are, with a little patience, time, Carol’s vast knowledge and experience and of course groundwork, groundwork, groundwork! There are never any guarantees in life, but what’s within the limits of Serenity Hill Equine, they will perform. In addition to the rehabilitation program, Serenity Hill Equine Offers, Lessons for Adults and Children ages 5 & up and has a large variety of horses and ponies that are well trained and one of a kind! The programs include all levels and disciplines styles and offer reasonable and flexible scheduling and rates. Serenity Hill Equine welcomes in June to Serenity Hill Equine and the lesson programs, Instructor Sarah Tompkins, with over twenty years experience and Instructor Helen Egnasher, with over thirty years experience. Both offer instruction in confidence building, dressage, cross country, stadium jumping and hunter/jumpers. Reasonable rates and flexible scheduling are available.
